About Me

What is there to say about me?
I live and work in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
You won’t find me on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Xing, LinkedIn, or Instagram – this is a conscious decision.
There are (so far) no photos of me either.

I started painting in the mid-1990s, during a time when I was struggling mentally. It was a valve – a way to distract myself or process what was going on inside me.
The crucial inspiration came from a calendar featuring works by Joan Miró. I began to recreate some of his paintings and gradually developed my own style.
Over time, influences from artists such as Kandinsky or Hundertwasser also found their way into my work. Today, I am mostly inspired by everyday life – by situations, people or moments that move me.
Sometimes, I photograph something interesting that later becomes the basis for a painting. It is a process that constantly evolves – and is never truly finished.

Over time, digital tools and generative artificial intelligence have also become part of my creative work.
I do not see AI as a replacement for creativity, but rather as an additional artistic tool: a kind of digital studio where ideas can become visible, audible and continue to evolve.
Alongside my traditional paintings, this has led to AI-assisted visual worlds, digital experiments and music pieces that can be seen and heard throughout my gallery.
The themes, lyrics, artistic direction, selection, post-processing and final composition always remain part of my own creative process.
For me, the interaction between painting, photography, digital art, music and artificial intelligence represents another step within my personal universe of bold ideas.

Who am I?

I am STEFF,
born in Hockenheim,
rooted in life, always journeying between mind, heart, and creativity.

I’m in my early 60s and have experienced quite a bit professionally.
My career began as a radio equipment technician, led me through radio electronics to a certified multimedia publisher,
always accompanied by a fascination for technology and design.
For many years, I worked in the IT sector, gaining experience, mastering challenges, and following developments.
Now I’ve left that field behind – today I work in vocational education. I help young people develop their personal and professional skills and explore new perspectives – a fulfilling task with meaning.

Besides my professional life, there is of course a private one – and it's just as diverse.
As I already mentioned, painting has been a part of my life for many years, a form of expression and creative refuge.
I'm also passionate about all things web: designing and coding websites brings me just as much joy as creating and editing video clips with the right software.
But that’s far from all – my interests are broad, and there’s always something new to discover. Curiosity drives me.

Of course, movement and nature are also a part of my life.
Cycling and skiing bring me just as much joy as swimming, hiking, or geocaching – all healthy ways to clear my mind and recharge.
I enjoy being around people, love good conversations and genuine connections. Values like respect, helpfulness, listening, letting others speak, and accepting everyone as they are – to me, these are not just empty phrases, but core principles I live by.
All of this – creativity, movement, connection, values – flows into my life, both privately and professionally. And most important of all: my family. They are my anchor, my inspiration, and the place where everything comes together that truly matters to me.

Warmly Welcome  to my universe...

...a place full of magic, ideas, inspiration, and the special sparkle of the extraordinary

The image was taken in 2013 in the vineyards of Bad Dürkheim.
Something told me during that walk, at that very moment,
“Turn around...” — and I did. The light, the view, the atmosphere in that moment – I just had to capture it.

The Website Title!

In German, it roughly means “Gallery of Bold Ideas.”
Yes, I see my paintings as bold ideas — and also some of the photos you can see here on this website.

"Don’t be afraid of perfection. You’ll never reach it."

Salvador Dali, 1904-1989

Painting

I mostly paint with classic watercolors – the very ones many still remember from school. My brushes are also simple standard tools, as is the paper: I work on painting pads in A4, A3, or A2 formats. For sketching, I use pencil and eraser; I like to add accents with gold or silver markers. Some pictures are even created entirely with standard felt-tip pens. It’s precisely this simplicity that gives my work its special charm: the imperfection of the brushstroke, the uneven density of the color areas – they give each piece its own character.

  Discovering the Idea

For me, painting is like discovering an idea. My pictures are not planned in advance – they grow with each stroke, directly on the paper. I constantly see things around me that ignite my imagination and allow an idea to take shape. Often, rough sketches begin to form in my mind. When something won’t let go of me, I capture it spontaneously with a pencil – fleeting, raw, but meaningful. Then I look at the sketch, let it sink in, and gradually the lines fill with colors, with shapes, with life. At some point, I feel the moment: now it’s time to paint – before the idea fades away again. The fascinating thing is: while painting, the picture transforms. It takes on a life of its own, drifting from the original idea – and that’s exactly where the magic lies for me.

An Example

  The Creative Project

A creative project always begins in my mind – nourished by all the impressions and inspirations around me. From this emerge initial ideas – sometimes one, sometimes several – which I eventually put on paper. I then consider what format the piece should take and which colors and brushes I want to use. Often, I decide intuitively – sometimes I plan purposefully, sometimes I leave room for experimentation. I might combine watercolor, felt-tip, or acrylics in one piece. Once I’ve started painting, I usually want to complete the artwork in one go. That can take several hours – but that’s exactly where I find the power of the moment: being fully immersed in the creative flow.

  The Materials

What materials do I use? Let’s get this straight from the start: If you feel like just trying it out, regular everyday materials are enough – that’s what I use too.
Paints
I mainly use classic opaque paints, commonly referred to as “watercolors.” These lightfast and vibrant colors adhere well to all absorbent surfaces like cardboard, watercolor paper, or plain drawing paper. They are easy to use and ideal for beginners and advanced painters alike.
Tip:
These paints are readily available online – e.g., via Amazon or a quick Google search.
Brushes
I use various types of brushes: synthetic, Gussow brushes, or brushes with light natural bristles – depending on the desired effect. They come with both round and flat bristle heads. For beginners, I recommend a solid watercolor brush set with various sizes.
You can also find them online, e.g., on Amazon or via Google.
Felt-tip and Gloss Markers
For contours and special highlights, I like using gold or silver felt markers – often called gloss paint markers. They come in various line widths (e.g., 0.8 mm to 4 mm) and are great for details or accents.
Paper
At first, regular white A4 printer paper is enough. If you want higher quality, use painting pads in A4, A3, A2, or – for very large works – even A0. I usually work with paper weights between 70 g/m² and 200 g/m², depending on the subject and technique.
Scanner
I scan all my works using a simple desktop scanner (model S600). The quality is sufficient for my needs. If anyone out there has more expertise or tips – I welcome support, even on a voluntary basis.

You can find the scanner or comparable models online as well, such as on Amazon or through a Google search.

Material Examples

  The Painting

It’s always a special moment: When a picture is complete and lies before me, I feel this quiet happiness – the sense that a fleeting idea has become a tangible work of art. often begins with just an impulse – a thought, a color, a scene, a feeling. Something inside me starts working, very quietly. The inspiration grows, takes shape, becomes a project that won’t let me go. I start sketching, experimenting, changing – and eventually, brush, paint, and imagination merge. It’s a process that cannot be planned, more like an internal dialogue. I listen to what the picture tells me, how it wants to evolve. And when it’s done, when I set the final brushstroke, a kind of meditative calm often sets in. A finished picture is more than just color on paper. It is a testimony of that inner journey – from the first idea to the expression of my thoughts and emotions. It lies before me, not as a final point, but as the visible result of an invisible process. A piece of me – quiet and vibrant at the same time.
